Civil War Field Artillery Relic from a private collection Iron Artillery Tar Bucket Has evidence of tar drippings on surfaces. Hung under the cannons carriage, held a combined mixture of tar and grease used to lubricate the axels. Some dings from use (photos), pitting on some surfaces as expected. This is great piece of Civil War artillery/ordnance/cannon history. These buckets were carried on a cannon carriage and held grease used for lubricating the bore between firings. It is a cylinder with separately applied iron top and bottom pieces riveted in place, complete with original folding cast iron handle and mechanism that connects to bottom of gun carriage axle.
